getting in shape after 50

Getting in shape after 50 can't be done, right? Don't tell that to Fit Father Joe!

He lost 55 pounds at 52 years young!

According to Joe, his transformation was “remarkably unremarkable,” as he was at a place in life where so many guys in their 40s, 50s, and 60s find themselves.

He works a demanding job, he has responsibilities at home, and he had let his own health slip.

Joe had previously tried many other diets and programs to lose weight, and had success, but not sustainable success.

Many of you who will listen to Joe’s story have likely been in similar situations and had similar experiences.

Joe’s story really is one of the “everyday man.”

Who turned into a superman!

Listen to Joe's Story on the Fit Father Project Podcast:

Life Happens …

During his high school years, Joe was a sprinter and basketball player, but as he got older and time passed by, he got busy with family, work, and life.

His priorities changed, and his health took a backseat.

“My activity went from physical fitness to running around, getting my kids to places.”

Joe was not paying attention to his nutrition, either.

He tried several diet and workout plans, but nothing seemed sustainable.

“My diet became one of convenience, not nutrition. I rallied then. Sometimes I'd find a fad diet where I could lose 20 pounds or a piece of exercise equipment or videotape that I worked on for a little bit, but nothing was sustainable.”

As things kept piling up and life kept getting harder, Joe started gaining weight.

That's when he hit a low point in his life.

“It just seemed like life became harder. The stress hit, and I gained tremendous weight right before the pandemic, which was especially the low point of my journey.”

Joe weighed around 260 pounds, and he was feeling really low.

“I was at lunch with my staff, which was an eye-opener. I was in the oddest shape and disgusted with myself.”

Joe also experienced “tremendous heartburn,” which caused him a lot of pain and discomfort.

“I couldn't sleep. I was taking Pepcid AC and popping Tums like Chiclets. Even that didn't always work.”

He knew he needed to do something, and when he found the Fit Father Project, he was moved by its straightforward and sustainable approach.

“It just resonated with me. It wasn't one of these raw, get going, you've got to work out. It was a very calm approach. It immediately caught my interest. The Fit Father Project program was talking about nutrition, and that's what I was looking for.

He remembers when he was skeptical about joining the program and started making excuses not to join it.

But he did his research and dove into the program with full vigor.

“I made excuses, and this program answered all my questions. It took care of the excuses and didn't allow for the excuses. It had the answers to things that, in the past, would derail me or prevent me from continuing. So it was like a holistic approach.”

In the past, Joe came across many exercise programs and diet plans, and according to him, they weren't all bad.

However, he just found them overwhelming.

Getting In Shape After 50

According to Joe, his journey with the Fit Father Project was all about “hard work.”

By following the Fit Father Project's nutrition and workout plans, he was both looking and feeling healthy.

And he lost 55 pounds in 6 months!

I feel healthy, and I look healthy. It's been a measured, methodical approach. It is sustainable too.”

His mind changed as much as his body did, too.

“It took many years of poor habits to get here. It's not going to change overnight. Anyone who thinks it will is fooling themselves. I used to fool myself as well. What I needed was a little bit of structure and planning.”

Joe found the Fit Father Project's nutrition plans flexible and reasonable.

When he couldn't prepare his meals, his family stepped in and helped.

“It's good to have the support of the family!”

He also mentions that the nutrition plans comprised basic tips about healthy meals, which made getting in shape after 50 even easier.

“It's the everyday stuff that a lot of us know we should do. However, when it's put into a system, it's something you can follow on your journey. The structure is huge. It gives you something to hang on to that you start to build up to get your results, and then you get this intrinsic motivation.”

To stick to the Fit Father Project program, Joe devised an analogy that worked for him.

“I started using an analogy of a road trip. I considered the journey with the Fit Father Project a road trip for myself. It had various points along the way. It was also smooth sailing for many miles. I also knew I would encounter roadblocks, detours, and accidents. I knew I may find a destination where I wanted to stay for a while, but I needed an overall plan for my life where I knew I had put myself.”

Besides the well-structured nutrition and workout plans, Joe loved the Fit Father Project's Facebook group.

I found that the Facebook group is a powerful tool. It's such a great group. It's a private group that is all about support. You realize whatever you're going through, someone's either going through it right now or has gone through it. Anytime you've got a question or an issue, feel stuck in a rut, or you're plateauing, someone in the group will say that they've been there. So they'll ask you to hang in there.”

According to Joe, the Fit Father Project program's workouts were “reasonable,” and there was “no pressure.”

“It's not like you're watching a videotape, and people on the other side of the tape are going crazy, and you're trying to keep up with them. This is on your own. So you do what you can.”

Joe also made reasonable goals for getting in shape after 50.

“I made sure what I did was reasonable. So the workouts were reasonable, and the food was reasonable. The program allows for that. It made it easy to do so and was a good experience.”

Joe's quality of life is flourishing beyond his health.

He has recovered from various ailments and is in the best shape of his life.

“I'm big into walking now. I've got a five-mile neighborhood walk. There's also this one hill, which, before the program, would gas me out every time. I'd have to stop at the top and catch my breath. I cruise through it now. I don't break a sweat.”

Joe is loving every aspect of his new life.

“I look in the mirror, and I don't recognize who I see. I have a tone and muscles that I never had before. Then there are other non-scale victories that don't necessarily show up on the scale. I'm not out of breath. I was taking two different kinds of breathing medications. Now, I've just gone cold turkey. I don't need it. My blood pressure medications are cut in half. I don't have any heartburn anymore. So, I'm almost medicine free by changing my lifestyle, eating better, and exercising.”

So what would Joe say to someone looking to join the Fit Father Project?

“As a good father and parent, I've always put the needs of my family, friends, and coworkers before mine. At some point, you have to reprioritize things because despite being selfless, you're hurting yourself and those people as you're not the best version of yourself. So you're hurting the ability to be the best person for everyone. The journey will not always be smooth sailing or easy, but you need to keep going and never look back. You've got to remind yourself why you're on the journey constantly.”

3 Key Takeaways From Joe's Journey

To summarize, here are three key lessons you can learn from Joe’s successful health and fitness journey:

Lesson 1: There's No Magic Pill

As Joe says, “There's no other way around it. It's all hard work.”

There is no shortcut to achieving the desired results in getting in shape after 50.

Instead, you have to put in the effort to reap the benefits.

The fitness journey is challenging, but it is worth it.

Lesson 2: Set Reasonable Goals for Yourself

Goals are attainable when they are grounded in reality.

Unrealistic and unreasonable goals do more harm than good.

They adversely affect your self-esteem and confidence when you can't accomplish them.

Setting measurable goals helps you reach heights you never thought possible.

Lesson 3: Trust the Process

Success does not come overnight.

If you feel that you aren't seeing results quickly, it is not a cue for you to question your purpose and/or give up.

As Joe says, “We didn't get in this position overnight. It took many years of poor habits to get where we are right now. It's not going to change overnight.”

Give yourself time and trust the process. Getting in shape after 50 can be done!
