wake-up call

Have you found your health wake-up call and been able to really drill down to what’s truly important in your life?

It’s not always easy, but when you do, it can lead to profound life changes.

That was certainly the case for Fit Father Brian, a 45-year-old father of four boys, who has lost over 40 pounds and taken his life back!

For Brian, his wake-up call came when he started to realize that his health had fallen by the wayside, and he wasn’t always able to keep up with his family.

A picture at a family wedding made him say, “I looked like an old, fat man next to my beautiful wife, who's always in shape.”

On top of that, an impending backpacking trip had him feeling like his extra weight and knee pains would hold his family back.

He knew he needed to change, but he also knew his methods of losing weight when he was younger weren’t going to work now.

He needed accountability.

Something that was sustainable.

Something that was age-appropriate.

That’s when he found the Fit Father Project.

Listen to Brian's Story on the Fit Father Project Podcast:

Losing His Way, Health-Wise

Brian was always active, and he enjoyed exercise.

Still, his weight fluctuated over the year, but he found ways to keep it in check.

That is until life set in.

“I lost weight in my 20s and 30s. But with work, kids, and my busy job, I started having less time to exercise and eat healthily.”

A decrease in activity and an increase in poor eating lead to sleep apnea and other issues.

Plus, Brian suffers from knee pain due to an old back injury and a slower metabolism, and it all began to add up.

Brian knew his health and fitness were going sideways, and that he wasn't getting any younger.

Then he had his wake-up call, and things began to come into focus.

“Our youngest son was born when I was 41. At that time, I knew I needed to be a healthy dad in good shape to ensure that he had an energetic dad throughout his teenage years.”

His fatherly duties weren't his only wake-up call.

“Also, in April 2021, we went to a wedding. Looking back at the photos we took, I realized I looked like an old, fat man next to my beautiful wife, who's always in shape. Then, I had a backpacking trip planned in Montana and needed to be in better shape, lose some weight to enjoy it, and not feel like I was holding people back or that my knees were in pain the entire time.”

How Brian Acted On His Wake-Up Call

Brian had all the motivation he needed; now, he just needed a plan.

He knew he could easily drop pounds as he did in his younger days.

He needed something sustainable, something that was right for him and his lifestyle.

Brian found out about the Fit Father Project and was immediately drawn in.

“One thing that stuck out to me was that this program is geared toward men over 40. Also, you're not asking us to go to the gym six days a week for two hours because I could never do that. Then the accountability with the Facebook group and the coaching we got via the emails were things that I really needed.”

Brian started seeing results after one week on the program and was hooked.

He committed to the program with profound dedication and completely changed the picture of his mental and physical health.

“I feel cardiovascular improvements. My heart is definitely a lot healthier now. I also noticed that when I went on that backpacking trip, I did much better than before the program. My knees felt fine. I have the energy to come home at the end of the day and jump in with my kids. Also, having the mental energy and focus has been an important non-scale victory.”

So what would Brian say to someone looking to join the Fit Father Project?

“When you’re on this path, there’s no perfection. There’s no black or white. It’s just about consistency. As a psychologist in clinical work, I try to help people see that if they can make improvements in one area, they develop the skills to do it in other areas. It’s the same mindset and confidence. Like, I’ve done this. What else can I do? I can improve. I can improve my parenting. I can improve things at work. I can improve relationships. A lot of it is about the mindset that I’ll work on what I want to achieve.”

3 Key Takeaways From Brian's Journey

To summarize, here are three key lessons you can learn from Brian’s successful health and fitness journey:

Lesson 1: Keep Yourself Hydrated

Hydration is one of the most basic keys to a healthy body.

Hydration is necessary for nearly all body functions, and dehydration can lead to many health problems.

So keep drinking that water!

Lesson 2: The Number on the Scale Isn't Everything

Some days you will not see the scale going any lower but don't let that demotivate you.

If you’re following your nutrition and workout plans diligently, know that you are gaining strength even if you are not losing weight.

On some days, the scale will be stable and not move.

Therefore, it’s important to understand that every day, your scale won't tell you how far you have come.

Be proud of the little milestones you are achieving every day.

Lesson 3: You Are the CEO of Your Body

In many ways, we have exported the autonomy of our health.

A generation of people believes that doctors are there to keep you healthy.

On the contrary, we can be the chief executive officers of our bodies if we know how to maintain them and keep them fit and healthy.

Everyone is responsible for their own well-being.

Thus, it is your responsibility to take care of yourself!
