win the day

Win the day … follow the plan every day … and pretty soon, you’re winning the year.

That was Fit Father Matt’s recommendation for men trying to build momentum to change their lives.

Matt is a 50-year-old father of three teenage athletes who used the Fit Father Project to lose 50 pounds just after his 50th birthday.

His journey went beyond the physical aspect; it was about reconnecting with his ability to focus. Having the discipline to become self-excellent, to nail a goal that you can truly follow, was only half of his accomplishments in improving his health.

He combined that mindset with the Fit Father Project to create a sustainable structure with his nutrition and exercise.

Matt’s story is perfect for anyone who has been on the roller coaster of starting and feeling like they’ve tried and failed many times. He’d been on that flow for many years until he joined the Fit Father Project, where he began to realign and reconnect with his deeper reasons for getting healthy.

Hearing about Matt’s 50-pound transformation may just get you on the right track as well!

Different Plans, Limited Success

Matt was never extremely overweight, but he always carried around some extra weight.

“Like many men, I always had peaks and valleys. I would get real serious for short periods of time, then back to nothing.”

As he got older, he ran long distances, training and participating in multiple marathons. He ate whatever he wanted, and he easily kept the weight off because of all the running. But when he stopped running, he didn’t stop his poor diet.

“I got to the point where I knew I needed to lose weight. So I was really interested in my health, and I was really good at following a plan. I thought maybe the plan doesn't even really matter. As long as you have something to follow and you do it day after day after day.”

Matt tried to lose weight and followed several different plans, believing that as long as he had something to follow, it didn’t matter.  Name any diet and chances are, he tried it.

I stayed pretty disciplined. I would document my plan. I would do my exercise, And then … life happens.

That rollercoaster of going up and down, again and again, made him realize that maybe he wasn’t as disciplined as he thought.

He knew he needed something more sustainable. And that's when he found the Fit Father Project.

It’s not impossible to lose weight after 50. Just win the day, day after day! Listen to Matt as he details his weight loss journey.

Win The Day

When Matt started on the Fit Father Project, he didn't just want to lose weight. He also wanted to change his bad eating habits.

“If you’re over 50 pounds overweight, you’re going to have to make some changes, and it’s going to be hard. You’re going to have to have some discipline, whether it’s having too many beers by the pool or having that late-night snack. And in my case, I’m absolutely an ice cream addict.”

On sustainability, Matt highlighted the difference in his mindsets concerning whatever plan he was following.

“Instead of thinking, ‘OK, I can manage this for a few months because it’s going to bring my weight down, I’m going to be happy, and then I can go back to normal,' I started thinking, ‘This is just what I need to do moving forward.'”

Matt quickly learned that it's not about a ‘diet' — it's about making sustainable lifestyle changes. It's a marathon, not a race.

He set a goal to be in the best shape of his life by his 50th birthday. However, he didn’t follow through with it immediately because life got in the way. When he turned 50 without meeting his goal, it was time to get serious. He reexamined his mission statement and went back to work.

I wanted to be the best dad and husband I could, but I had to take care of myself first. So my mission statement was really around building that self-esteem, that self-discipline, that kind of fortitude to teach myself that I can do hard things. I can set a goal I can follow through on it. And I can achieve that goal.

Once Matt got started, he never looked back. He lost 10 pounds in each of the first two months on the Fit Father Project. In month three, he felt “turbocharged” and lost another 30. More than that, he was completely reinvigorated.

“I feel like I have the energy to take on any challenge in front of me. The days of sitting around and doing nothing are over.”

Matt has cut out drinking and snacking, and he even kicked his diet soda habit. He replaced unhealthy habits with healthy ones and created a happy, active life.

“It's not for everyone, but for me, it's zero compromise, zero cheating. I have discipline and stick to the plan.”

Matt also attributes his success to the Fit Father Project Brotherhood Facebook group.

That group is key. The guys on there are kind of rock stars in my life. All of those guys have been there. And they're always around to give you words of inspiration as they did to me. And, sometimes, that's all that it takes to keep you going.

win the day

So what would Matt say to someone looking to join the Fit Father Project?

Don't turn it into something bigger than it is. Win the day. Win each day. Win the day … follow the plan every day … and pretty soon, you’re winning the year. I'm not anything special. I just finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired and said, I'm going to make a change. So I just follow the plan, and every single day I try to be a little bit better than yesterday.

3 Key Takeaways From Matt's Journey

Here are the three key lessons you can learn from Matt’s life transformation.

Lesson 1: Find Your Discipline

Matt followed the FFP meal plan and workouts religiously. Some men find ways to adapt it to their wants and needs, but for Matt, sticking to the plan led to success.

Lesson 2: Ground Yourself With a Mission Statement

Matt was set on gaining back his sense of self-excellence — the ability to follow through on something — to truly strengthen his focus to follow through with a plan. A clear picture of what he wanted to achieve reminded him why he started.

Lesson 3: Start on Your Journey Immediately

Successfully meeting your goals is about starting as soon as you get the idea — not next week. It’s better to start ASAP.
